Research Interests:
Dr. Monje's research engages with issues of neoliberalism, and political governance. In his research he looks at the historical connections and continuations between the current ‘war on terror’ and the political strategies and practices of the past, especially during the cold war. He is currently completing a book-length manuscript on this topic. In addition to this, reflecting his diverse educational background, Dr. Monje is also writing a manuscript on visual culture, and co-editing a book on humor after 9/11. Dr. Monje has also worked as a field linguist in Bolivia and Mexico on projects funded by the NSF, Harvard University, and the Bolivian government, and these experiences continue to influence his research and approach to documentary projects' the most recent of which is a two-year research project on the impact of the Tsunami in a coastal town in Sri Lanka that is culminating in a video documentary.
