Research Interests:
Dr. Schwartz's research focuses on how media cover issues concerning gays and lesbians, particularly health-related issues. Dr. Schwartz' dissertation, completed in July of 2009, examined media and gay male body image. In a three-component study, he investigated the images that were produced for gay males' consumption in an analysis of thirty years of The Advocate; interviewed gay men about how they contend with body image concerns in their everyday lives; and conducted an experiment assessing how stigma and blame are attributed to gay men with body image problems.
The overall goal of Dr. Schwartz's research is to investigate how media may play a role in influencing: (1) public opinion toward gay rights issues; and (2) health-related choices made by gay men and lesbians. His work has been published in Journal of Communication, Mass Communication and Society, Journal of Homosexuality, and The American Journal of Men's Health.
