Undergraduate
Combined BA/MA Degree
Combined B.A./M.A. in Communication, Media and Cultural Studies
The Communication Studies Department's combined B.A./M.A. degree program allows for the exploration of media and communication through the research traditions of media and cultural studies. It is a selective program that allows students to undertake master's course work in the final years of undergraduate study and complete the M.A. requirements in one post-senior year.Participants in this program will graduate with a B.A. in Communication Studies and an M.A. in Communication, Media and Cultural Studies. The program is designed to develop critical and analytical skills for application to the study of contemporary culture. It provides a scholarly analysis of media and culture, not professional training.
How It Works
Accepted students will enroll in graduate courses in their junior year and may carry a combined undergraduate/graduate course-load through their senior year. The undergraduate degree is awarded at the completion of undergraduate requirements. The post-senior year will be devoted exclusively to master's courses, and the student is considered a graduate student. Tuition and services align with the student's status. The master's curriculum consists of CMN courses. With permission of the Graduate Coordinator, students may enroll in up to two courses outside of the department, if the outside department(s) allow them to do so.
Three options, or tracks, are available to students who complete their degree in Communication, Media and Cultural Studies:
- Coursework Option: 30 semester credit hours
- Major Project Option: 24 semester credit hours and one 6 credit project
- Thesis Option: 24 semester credit hours and one 6 credit thesis
For more information on the curriculum please consult the Registrar's webpage.
